Remediation of mercury-contaminated soils and sediments using biochar: a critical review

چکیده

Abstract The transformation of mercury (Hg) into the more toxic and bioaccumulative form methylmercury (MeHg) in soils sediments can lead to biomagnification MeHg through food chain, which poses ecological health risks. In last decade, biochar application, an situ remediation technique, has been shown be effective mitigating risks from Hg sediments. However, uncertainties associated with use its underlying mechanisms remain. Here, we summarize recent studies on effects advantages amendment related biogeochemistry bioavailability systematically analyze progress made understanding responsible for reductions bioaccumulation. existing literature indicates (1) that application decreases mobility inorganic (2) reduce accumulation crops but a complex effect net production. this review, two main mechanisms, direct mechanism (e.g., Hg-biochar binding) indirect biochar-impacted sulfur cycling thus Hg-soil binding), explain reduction by based interactions among biochar, soil under redox conditions are highlighted. Furthermore, problems treat Hg-contaminated sediments, such as appropriate dose long-term effectiveness discussed. Further research involving laboratory tests field applications is necessary obtain mechanistic role reducing diverse types varying develop completely green sustainable biochar-based functional materials Hg-related

Electrokinetic Remediation of Mercury-contaminated Soils

A series of batch tests were conducted to investigate the relative desorption potential of mercury from kaolin and glacial till soils under the effect of three extractant agents, namely, KI, NaEDTA and NaCl (all of them with a concentration of 0.1 M). These tests were conducted under different pH conditions (within a pH range between 2 and 12). Also batch tests using deionized water were perfor...

Remediation of Diesel Contaminated Soils Using Surfactants: Coulumn Study

This study presents the experimental remediation studies of diesel contaminated soil with Sodium Deducible Sulfate (SDS) as surfactants using column tests. Sandy selected soil had the grain size distribution of # 40 meshes to the # 200 mesh range. The soil columns were contaminated with adequate diesel amount to achieve the concentration of 10000 and 20000 ppm in soil. 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 percen...

Biosurfactant-facilitated remediation of metal-contaminated soils.

Bioremediation of metal-contaminated wastestreams has been successfully demonstrated. Normally, whole cells or microbial exopolymers are used to concentrate and/or precipitate metals in the wastestream to aid in metal removal. Analogous remediation of metal-contaminated soils is more complex because microbial cells or large exopolymers do not move freely through the soil. The use of microbially...

Electrokinetic remediation of oil-contaminated soils.

This investigation was undertaken to determine the factors influencing electrokinetic remediation of soils from petroleum pollutants. The remediation method was applied in two versions: (i) static and (ii) flowing, when a sample was washed with leaching solution. It was found that all the soils studied can be purified using this technique. It was also observed that the mineral and grain-size co...

Practical remediation of the PCB-contaminated soils

A practical method for the elimination of PCBs from PCB-contaminated soil has been developed by the combination of Soxhlet extraction using a newly-developed modified Soxhlet extractor possessing an outlet valve on the extraction chamber with the chemical degradation. Various types of PCBs contaminated in soils could be completely extracted in refluxing hexane, and the subsequent hydrodechlorin...
